This chapter provides an overview of the behavior of second-position clitics in Tagalog (Filipino), an Austronesian language of the Philippines. We illustrate the second-position nature of their linear placement and describe the inventory of clitics (certain pronouns and a limited set of adverbs), and the linear ordering and semantic scope of clitics with respect to one another. On each of these topics, we highlight apparent and claimed generalizations as well as potential exceptions and challenges. We advocate for the view that the linear placement of these clitics must be determined postsyntactically, but constrained by certain syntactic domains. The existence of such second-position clitics is also one characteristic of the so-called Philippinetype subgroup of Austronesian languages.
